Before requesting a replacement
In many situations, knowing your SSN is enough and the physical card is not required. Keep the card at home rather than carrying it routinely.
Steps
- Open SSA’s replacement-card page and answer the eligibility questions.
- Sign in to or create the required secure account when offered.
- Provide the identity information and documents requested for your circumstances.
- If SSA requires an in-person step, schedule an appointment and bring original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency.
- Watch for the replacement card by mail. SSA states that delivery is generally 5 to 10 business days after completing the request.
Replacement limits
Federal rules generally limit replacement cards to three in one year and ten in a lifetime. Legal name changes and some hardship or status-related exceptions do not count toward those limits.
